Unit 3: Potential Sources of Funding

Arts Council:

The Arts Council offer a range of different funding programmes and the one I am looking into for my budget for my production of Macbeth is called 'Arts Impact Fund'.

Arts Impact Fund is a repayable loan finance for social investment in arts organisations. To be eligible for this particular funding programme you must be regulated charitable arts organisations based in England, working in a specified area of social need. Also the fund is open permanently therefore you can apply at any chosen time of your choice whenever you feel ready to.

About the Fund

The repayable loan finance offers between £150,000 and £600,000 and is available to arts organisations. Funding needs can vary - for example, an applicant may want to buy or refurbish a building, purchase equipment, pay salaries or buy-in additional services to help the organisation generate more income - perhaps for a tour or exhibition.

Who's involved?

The fund is created and funded by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Nesta. It’s supported by the Arts Council with additional funding from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Why we think this is important?

As part of our work to increase the resilience of art and culture in England, we want to support organisations in exploring alternative sources of non-grant income. We are building our knowledge and understanding of how social investment could best support the sector.
Before launching the Arts Impact Fund, we engaged in some scoping work with Social Finance and the Arts Ventures group, along with a preparatory investment in the Investment and Contract Readiness Fund managed by Social Investment.

Eligibility

Before you apply, make sure you meet the eligibility criteria. The initial criteria, found in more detail on the Arts Impact Fund website, is as follows.
You must be:
  • an organisation with primary activity in the arts
  • a regulated body with a charitable purpose
  • registered as operating in England
  • working in at least one area of social need that the fund supports
Why Arts Council?

Arts Council would be a great funding programme to choose for my budget and production of Macbeth because it offers a range of different funding programmes which I can choose from, but the one I have chosen to write about above is a great funding programme for me because it offers a loan in which I can pay salaries with to my actors, dancer, crew, technicians etc. and it means I can also purchase equipment that I need, such as: set design templates, set design equipment e.g. paint, wood, nails, screws, cutting tools etc. and I can also purchase other equipment such as lighting equipment, sound equipment and so on and so fourth. Lastly it helps with hiring equipment, venues and so on and it also helps as an income in which I can spend on things such as refreshments and programme printing and advertising in which will then gain more income in which I can put away to repay the loan back.
