Unit 38: Dance Performance - Guernica

In the Dance Show we performed as a class two dance pieces called: Guernica and Payday from the Musical that we are currently performing at college 'Made in Dagenham'.

Guernica was the first group choreographed piece that was performed in the dance show and the dance itself was smooth and really came together in the previous tech run but we all pulled it out of the bag when it came to the main performance. Myself and Jennah were the first people to perform as we started the piece off with our dance duet.

1. What were your strengths and weaknesses in terms of your performance skills?

My strengths were that I was confidence when starting the performance off because Jennah and myself both knew exactly when to come out of our crouched position in which we both covered our faces which showed great co-ordination between the both of us and we were in time and it involved participation of the whole body. Furthermore some more of my strengths that were shown in this dance piece are that of the fact that we were both in time with each other for the start and I showed great extension with my hands and fingers and it also showed strength in my arms as I slowed down the movement to create more of an effect. Also I had good energy throughout this routine which then moves on to me having good facial expressions. I feel that I really acted out the fear that we were portraying in the piece and also moves onto myself and Jennah being in time with the music so we hit the correct timing which corresponded with the dance move.

On the other hand I had weaknesses as well throughout the performance, there were moments in the performance in which I forgot moves and ended up just leaving them because I had already travelled to the wrong place of the stage and I was out of time, therefore I left those moves and continued but you could tell bits were missing. Furthermore there was a section of the routine in which I had managed to place myself in the wrong position so then Jennah ended up walking into me and then that move didn't flow as much as it should have whereas instead it made it look choppy. Furthermore our transitions lacked enthusiasm and also looked quite stiff but it also could have been effective as we were meant to show fear. Also my balance wasn't great during one move in which we both stand on one leg facing inwards to each other and we outstretch our arms. I wobbled slightly which made it look slightly unrehearsed and amateur.

2. What were your strengths and weaknesses in terms of your performance skills?

My strengths in terms of my performance showed focus, energy, emphasis, facial and bodily expression. With focus, I was constantly focused on remembering the moves in the order that we had choreographed because I wanted to make sure it was fluent. Therefore my face looked focused which also helped with my facial and bodily expression because I knew the moves so I wanted to emphasize on the fact that I did and wanted to show that it could flow. I also had energy which helped because we were portraying people that would have been constantly on the ball and were focused so it helped with the performance.

Furthermore my weaknesses in terms of my performance skills showed projecting and communicating ideas because I feel that I didn't project the movement as much as I could which then led onto not communicating the ideas of being scared.

3. What do you need to improve this term and why?

I need to improve on my ability the have more commitment to the dance lessons which will help me for the next upcoming unit.
